Volunteer for environmental & conservation work
If you want to get out in the fresh air then volunteering on the estate is for you.
| Saturday Volunteer Group Next Date: Saturday 6th March 2010 Location: Meet at the main car park at Hill Farm, Little Wittenham. Task: Finishing off this winter's work on Castle Hill by having a fire and burning all the scrub that has been cut. We may cut a little more but we need to be sure that it is all gone so no areas of the grassland are shaded out over the summer months. Time: 10am - 3pm but feel free to stay for as long as you are able. Info: Gloves, tools, refreshments and cake will be provided but please bring a packed lunch if you intend to stay until 3pm. Sturdy footwear & warm/waterproof clothing needed. Please let Alison Vallance tel: 01865 409410 know if you are able to come along so we have some idea of numbers (and i know how much cake to buy!) |
Volunteering is often the best way to gain experience to secure that first paid role in conservation and is a fun way to learn practical skills that will stand you in good stead for a career in conservation. Even if you’re not looking to work within conservation, volunteering on the estate is a great way to meet new people, get fit and spend time in the great outdoors!
Practical Estate Management Volunteers
Practical estate management for conservation can make a genuine difference both immediately and for the longer term through habitat creation and management. The work we do on the estate is very seasonal but tasks may include, hedge laying, coppicing, tree planting, fencing, scrub clearance and working with livestock.
You do not have to be skilled as all training and safety equipment is provided. All levels of experience are welcome.
Wildlife Monitoring Volunteers
We also have opportunities to help monitor how the wildlife on our estate is responding to our management by volunteering as a surveyor helping with butterfly, bird, plant and newt surveys. Identification skills will be required for such a role.
