Countryside Stewardship: Leisure and Recreation

Learning Outcome

The learner will be able to realise the value of the countryside for public recreation and enjoyment.

The learner has achieved this outcome because s/he can:

1. Demonstrate appropriate behaviour in the countryside and know the country code.

2. Identify a footpath, bridleway, byway and permissive access.

3. Follow a route using a map.

4. Identify 3 main features on an ordnance survey map, e.g. contour lines, water features, habitat features such as woodland or estuaries.

5. Identify three ways in which management is required to maintain public access on the site, e.g. safe stiles, footpath maintenance, opening gates, requirements of the disabled

6. Identify 3 different types of land used for conservation and public recreation, e.g. nature reserve, farmland, green belt, SSSI, AONB, National Parks, town parks.

7. Identify 3 possible causes of conflict between conservation and public recreation, e.g. bird nesting areas, use of mountain bikes, picnic areas, visitor pressure

8. Demonstrate a personal interest in the environment and produce evidence of pursuing an environmental activity e.g. bird watching, wildlife photography, natural history drawing and painting, plant and animal identification.
