Sheep Flock

The farm has a commercial breeding flock of 400 Hartline and Hartline cross ewes. A small flock of Beulah speckled face ewes provide replacements for the conservation management flock of 35 Wethers which graze Little Wittenham Nature Reserve.

The commercial flock grazes a combination of permanent grass fields and temporary rye grass/white clover leys. Finished lambs have been sold wholesale but difficult trading conditions in 2002 prompted a change to direct selling at local Farmers Markets adding value to the flock and helping us to re-connect people with farming and food production. ‘Little Wittenham Lamb’ is available at six local Farmers Markets:

The sheep flock is an integral part of our sustainable farming as there are potential agronomic and biodiversity benefits associated with mixed farming systems. For full detailed background of the history of our sheep flock download our farming report.
